Review: Smashbox Photo Finish Primerizer

Review: Smashbox Photo Finish Primerizer

It’s always a challenge to find a great makeup primer. There are dozens of different primers available on the market, and it can often be difficult to figure out where to begin, especially if you’re new to primers.  In addition, most of us don’t have tons of time to prep our skin with skincare and various layers of makeup, so it’s always exciting when a brand releases an innovative combination product that can serve more than one purpose.  Such is the case with the new Smashbox Photo Finish Primerizer, which combines a primer with a moisturizer into one product and eliminates an extra step in your skincare and makeup routine.

Years ago, primers were completely unheard of, and now they’re considered a necessity to prepare your skin and even-out any skin issues before applying your foundation. It also helps to extend the lifetime of your foundation’s wear time throughout the day if you find the right one. The wrong primer can cause a lot of issues though, and I have definitely experienced my share of challenges. It’s critical to select a primer that fits your skin type, as they are not all “one size fits all.” For example, I have had very dry skin since I turned 40, and the same primers that I wore several years ago will now ball up, peel away, or turn into alligator-looking texture on my skin when I try to apply foundation over them. It turns into a literally mess, and I end up washing my face to start all over again. Please keep that in mind throughout this review because what works for me, may not work the same for you.Smashbox Primer

Many people seem to either love or hate Smashbox primers. Smashbox was the very first primer brand that I ever tried many years ago, when they released their original silicone-based formula. That formula is still sold today and works great if you have oily skin, large pores, or combination skin. They now have a variety of other primers intended to address skin issues such as redness, dullness, and other tonal issues.  as red skin, dullness, and more. They also released a water-based formula a few years ago that wasn’t coated in silicones but was a much lighter formulation for people who don’t like the heaviness of silicone.  I liked that version, but I was REALLY excited when they recently released the Primerizer.

The Smashbox Primerizer is best for people with dry or normal-to-dry skin, although their ad says it works for all skin types. According to Smashbox, the Primerizer delivers 24-hour hydration and powerful primer benefits in the lightest possible texture. It’s great for dryness, dull and uneven texture, and fine lines and wrinkles. It also contains Niacinamide, which is a skincare ingredient that can help plump and moisturize your skin, in addition to hyaluronic acid, which contains more than 1000 x it’s weight in water.  Hyaluronic acid is a key ingredient for everyone with dry skin, normal skin, aging skin, or who is in dry, hot climates.

Smashbox Primerizer – My Test and Review

I was so nervous to try this primer based on my past negative experiences, that I went to Sephora and asked for a sample that I could take home. I highly recommend that for any skincare product if you’re close to a Sephora. I wore that sample for 4 days and then decided that I loved it enough to purchase myself. I love the idea that I can skip my final moisturizer step before applying my makeup. I still apply a very rigorous skincare routine every morning (and night), but I can skin one of the moisturizers I use in lieu of this. If you’re extremely dry, you will need to decide if you can do the same. I was concerned that this primer would feel greasy or not absorb well before I applied my makeup, but that was no issue. It actually absorbs pretty quickly. I applied the primer and let it set for a few minutes before applying my foundation. My foundation applied flawlessly over this.

Unlike other horrible experiences from the past, I didn’t experience any issues with this primer peeling, balling up, or making my skin look like an alligator’s, as I was blending in my foundation. It looked smooth, well-blended, hydrated but not greasy, and best of all…. it held my makeup in place all day and night long! My makeup literally didn’t budge until I took it off late at night, and it didn’t settle into my pores and fine lines. I really put this primer to the test. This wasn’t a 1 or 2 day test. I  used it daily for over 2 weeks before writing this review, and I’m thoroughly impressed with the results.  You really can’t ask more for than what this Primerizer delivers!

If you have oily or combination skin, be sure to grab a sample at your local Sephora or Ulta and try it out first. As I mentioned previously, primers are not a “one size fits all” solution. This worked great for me because I have dry (sometimes normal), aging skin. I can’t personally attest to how it will perform on other skin types. If you try it out, be sure to let me know! I’d love to hear your feedback!

There’s really a primer for everybody within the Smashbox brand, so don’t give up if you tried one of the other formules and don’t like it. I often hear people say that they don’t like the “original” Smashbox primer, but there’s so many options available. I’ve used Smashbox products for a long time and recommend many of their products in general. I am not affiliated with Smashbox at all, nor do I receive PR from them. It’s just one of the first brands that helped me take my makeup to the next level, way before YouTube and Instagram became a thing.
