Review: BoxyCharm Subscription Service

Review: BoxyCharm Subscription Service

Subscription services have exploded in popularity over the past few years. To be exact, a new consumer insights retail report found that subscription box sites have increased by three thousand percent over the past three years.  You can literally find a subscription service for almost anything today…. movies, clothes, pet products, razors, beauty products, and even food. Subscription boxes are a great way to try new brands and products for a fraction of the retail price, while giving you the excitement of a surprise box of goodies on your doorstep every month.  There are countless beauty-based subscription boxes, and it can be somewhat daunting to sort through them all and determine which ones provide the best value and product offerings. That’s why I decided to try a few of the most popular ones to see if they’re really worth the hype and value.

The first beauty-based subscription box that I ever tried was Ipsy, which is a monthly beauty bag containing a handful of mostly trial-sized products. I cancelled it though, after realizing that I just tossed all of the trial-sized IPSY products in a drawer and never used anything. That’s why I was so excited to discover BoxyCharm last fall. I fell in love with their concept of providing full-sized beauty products for a fraction of their retail value. Yes, you read that right… full sized products, not tiny trial sizes!

What is BoxyCharm? It’s a monthly beauty box subscription service where you receive 4 to 5 full-sized products with a total retail value of over $100 . . . for just $21 a month. That’s a huge savings over the regular retail price of each of the products in the box. Based on my experience over the past 10 months, the products aren’t throw-away items that will get tossed in a drawer and never used, but they’re legitimately great products such as eyeshadow palettes, eyebrow pencils, makeup brushes, lipsticks, lip liners, and more. They provide staple beauty products that you use on a daily basis.  It seems like every month, the boxes get better and better, leaving me to wonder how this subscription service stays in business, much less turns a profit of any kind.

Some of the products contained in the BoxyCharm boxes are from brands that you may have never heard of before, but that’s one of the advantages…. to find new, up-and-coming brands that produce quality products, some with a story behind them. For example, some of the past boxes have contained products from a brand called Her Cosmetics, which donates 20% of their profits to a non-profit organization that advances empowerment, self-fulfillment and actualization for women and girls through leadership programs, advocacy, education, and research. They’re also cruelty-free, paraben-free, and make their products with natural ingredients. Other brands included in past BoxyCharm boxes are highly recognizable such as Smashbox, Bare Minerals, Ofra, Luxe Brushes, Makeup Geek, Biobelle, Pur, Temptu, Zpalette, and many more. At least every other month, they include a full-sized eyeshadow palette or contour/highlighting palette from one of a few brands, and they don’t scrimp on quality. Even if you only use one product out of the entire box, it always pays for itself… and then some! Any items you don’t want will make excellent gifts for friends and loved ones, especially for birthdays and holidays. I guarantee one thing… You’ll definitely want to keep most of the stuff for yourself!

BoxyCharm July 2017

My July 2017 BoxyCharm. Includes eyeshadow palette, BareMinerals Sunscreen, Ofra Body Illuminizer, eyebrow pencil, and ColourPop liquid lipstick.

There has historically been a wait-list to join the BoxyCharm subscription service, but I know they’ve been working really hard to expand their customer base and eliminate the wait. As of the publication time of this review, they don’t have a waiting list. I heard they’re ramping up for their August box which is expected to be even more popular than previous boxes. You can cancel your subscription at any time; just cancel online before the first of the month before the next month’s box is billed. When you subscribe, you should receive the box sent out for that month. In other words, if you order on July 15th, you should receive the July box unless it’s sold out, at which time you would receive the next month’s box. The company always bills your credit card on the 1st of every month, and they ship boxes around the 6th – 9th. It takes an average of a week to receive it; you will receive most boxes by the middle of each month. It automatically renews every month unless you cancel. The eyeshadow palette in the July 2017 box is absolutely amazing. The quality of these shadows is better than high-end shadows I’ve spent a fortune on. This beats the Jaclyn x Morphe eyeshadows by far!

If you’re interested in sneak peaks of what may arrive in your next month’s BoxyCharm box, you can follow BoxyCharm on Instagram and Facebook where they always post hints and sneak peaks, one product at a time. There’s a lot of buzz and excitement about the upcoming August BoxyCharm box after they verified that a full Tarte eyeshadow palette will be included in every box. That’s right! Every subscriber will receive the Tarte Rainforest of the Sea II Eyeshadow Palette! That palette retails for $36, so the box more than pays for itself with that one product. It’s not too late to subscribe and take advantage of the August box, coming soon.

BoxyCharm June 2017

My June 2017 BoxyCharm included an eyeshadow palette, Luxie brush, set of sheet masks, Ofra liquid lipstick, and Artist Coutour highlighter powder.

As if the products weren’t enough, you also earn “charms” for every month you’re subscribed, when you review a product in your box, or when you refer friends. This is BoxyCharm’s version of a rewards program. Save up your charms, and select products or rewards from their Charm shop on the BoxyCharm website. Every 1,000 charms that you earn equals $10 in reward dollars.

BoxyCharm May 2017

BoxyCharm May 2017 – Contour and Highlight palette, brow palette, brow brush, face brush, Bronzer.

As with any product or subscription service, there are areas for improvement. One of the biggest complaints about BoxyCharm is that their box isn’t customized for your skin tone, skin type, or other preferences. Some competetors, such as IPSY, allow you to complete profile questions indicating all of your personal information so that they can tailor the products to your preferences. Since BoxyCharm does not currently have this ability, you may receive products that don’t work well for your skin tone or skin type. For example, they’ve sent out several different bronzers or highlighters in past boxes, and obviously one specific shade will never work for everyone. It hasn’t been a huge problem for me personally, and I can be forgiving of one or two products that don’t work perfectly when the overall value is so high. They typically have 2 different configurations of products/boxes every month. There will be about 3 products that everyone receives in every BoxyCharm box, while 1 or 2 of the products may be different than your friend’s configuration and what you see on YouTube unboxing videos. It can be disappointing when you don’t receive a particular product that other subscribers received, so be prepared for potential disappointment when that happens. You can’t pick your product preferences.

Overall, I highly recommend BoxyCharm. I’ve referred several people to this subscription service and received positive feedback from everyone so far. You honestly can’t beat the value. Where else can you receive over $100 in products for just $21? The boxes get better and better every month, especially as bigger brands join and collaborate with BoxyCharm on exclusive product offerings.

Price: $21 monthly – Automatically renews until you cancel.
