I recently discovered the new line of metallic liquid lipsticks by Milani Cosmetics, and I was intrigued by the beautiful shades available. After watching Instagram videos of makeup artists making stunning color combinations using the Milani products, I bought the 2 colors I liked most and decided to compare them to the Kylie Cosmetics Metal Matte collection. The results of my comparison actually surprised me. I haven’t purchased drugstore makeup in over a year, and this was my first purchase of any Milani lipsticks. I honestly didn’t go into this with high expectations, especially since I was somewhat disappointed with the quality of Kylie’s metal mattes. I figured the metallic properties of the lipstick meant I had to sacrifice some qualities I’ve grown to love in other matte lipsticks such as staying power and longevity. With that said, let’s get into the details of both!

Kylie Metal Mattes
I was really excited when Kylie Cosmetics released their metal matte line, which is currently available in 3 shades: King K, Reign, and Heir. These were released as the “Coachella Collection” in April 2016. They do not come packaged with a lip liner like the other Lipkits do, just the single liquid lipstick. In all honesty, I wasn’t impressed with the quality of the metals, especially when compared to the quality of Kylie’s matte lipkits. In general, the metals apply rather splotchy, and the coverage isn’t completely opaque except for the darkest shade (which is too dark to be wearable for the average person). I was looking forward to using the lightest shade the most (Heir), but that is the one that I ended up liking the least. Heir really can’t be worn alone as a solid lip color without looking splotchy and well… just horrible! However, it makes a beautiful highlighter shade when dabbed lightly over a darker color lipstick such as Kylie’s Mary Jo K or Kourt K. It lightens the darker shades and creates a beautiful sheen when combined.
From a quality perspective, these don’t seem to dry down completely, which I don’t like. Even when “dry,” they have a rather tacky feel when you touch your lips. The color easily transfers and wears off. This is a stark contrast to the Kylie Matte Lipkits, which dry completely and last all day without transferring or melting off the lips (as long as you don’t eat anything greasy). These won’t last all day and require multiple retouches.
Price: $18 each + $8.95 US shipping ($14.95 international shipping).
Where to Buy: Currently only authorized for sale on Kyliecosmetics.com. They are frequently out of stock, so to purchase you have to scope out the “restock” date and times and set your alark. Within an hour, they’re gone again!
Milani Amore Mattallics
I was happy to find that a drugstore brand such as Milani had released a line of Metal Mattes that would be affordable to everyone, but as I mentioned earlier, I wasn’t expecting too much after my experience with the Kylie Metals. I was completely shocked when I realized what amazing quality these little gems are! First, the colors are just stunning. The colors I compared (listed above) are good dupes for the Kylie Metal Mattes, but there are some small differences in the shades. I think the Milani shades are much more wearable and attractive. They have a larger color selection to choose from – 8 shades total.
Let’s talk quality! Amazing! These dried within seconds after application. They dried all the way down and weren’t tacky like the Kylie Metals. Despite how fast they dried, they aren’t overly dry feeling on the lips. These do not transfer at all. Never! No smudging, budging, wearing off….nothing! They stay on your lips until you use makeup remover to remove it! I’m not kidding. When I first swatched these on my hands, they wouldn’t even come off with plain soap and water. I had to take an oil-based makeup remover and scrub them off the back of my hand. Very impressive! I never expected this quality from a drugstore brand. I will definitely purchase more colors and start following Milani more closely. They knocked this out of the ballpark!
Price: $8.95 retail price (watch for sales or coupons)
Where to Buy: Your local drugstore, Milanicosmetics.com These are readily available at the drugstore or online. No wait times or strategizing to beat the clock for a restock!
These are advertised as “Limited Edition.” I’m not sure how long they’ll be available or if Milani will make them permanently if successful.
UPDATE (August 25, 2016) – Milani has recently created new packaging for the Milani Amore Metallic Lipsticks. Per an email I received earlier today, they have made these permanent, so they are no longer Limited Edition. They have also expanded the shade range and released 2 new shades recently.
